Who are you?
I’m Emily Kittendorf-King, a proud Michigan State University graduate and Michigan-native. I work in communications at Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA), the ninth largest dairy cooperative in the nation, marketing milk and serving dairy farm families in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.
How long have you worked with cooperatives?
My first introduction to cooperatives was at our local feed cooperative where I purchased livestock feed as a kid showing livestock in my local 4-H program. Professionally, I began my career at MMPA in 2019 and have been with them ever since!
Describe your role.
I am the Communications Manager at MMPA where I serve as Editor of our bimonthly magazine, the Milk Messenger. We’re a small, but productive team, and collectively oversee all internal and external communications, including social media channels, website pages, milk check mailers, press releases, trade show booths, etc.
What do you enjoy about working with cooperatives?
It’s incredibly rewarding working for such a purpose-driven organization. I know that the actions I take directly impact our members, and vice versa, that the actions they take impact me. I knew my entire life I wanted to work in agriculture, and it’s an honor to work for a dairy cooperative whose values align with my own.
When did you join CCA? Why?
I joined CCA when I started my career at MMPA in 2019. As part of being on the MMPA communications team, I joined CCA!
Did anything surprise you about CCA upon joining?
I am regularly impressed by the diversity of cooperatives throughout the United States and CCA has representatives from all sorts of cooperatives representing a wide variety of industries. I had no idea before joining CCA!
How has CCA supported you in your career?
CCA has surrounded me with people who are working in similar capacities and are often experiencing the same challenges. I enjoy learning about solutions they’ve found and tools they use in their daily workflow. I’ve also found incredible mentors who have helped shape my career path.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I regularly volunteer with Michigan 4-H and enjoy discovering new towns with bustling foodie scenes. I’m an avid reader and enjoy spending time outdoors in my garden or on hikes with my dogs and husband.
Do you have a “bucket list”? What are some of the things on that list?
Yes! I want to visit all 50 states. I have 10 left.
Give us something about yourself that is surprising or that most people don’t know.
I typically read over 100 books every year!
What advice would you give to professional communicators just starting their careers?
The best part about being new to a career is the fresh perspective you bring. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, because it can not only be a learning moment for you, but a realization moment for those around you that change may be needed.
